The clients were US citizens living in the UK. They had not properly declared income received overseas but brought into the UK. The income omitted amounted to more than £800,000 over many years. They had reason to believe that HMRC might find out about certain investments and decided to change accountants to websters because of our specialist tax knowledge. We put together a voluntary disclosure – which was referred to the HMRC specialist investigation team. We successfully negotiated a settlement – saving a significant amount of tax because we were able to bring together the specialist knowledge of overseas tax issues and the remittance basis as it has changed over the years and first hand experience of HMRC investigations from both sides of the fence. Our CEO is a former Inspector of taxes.
