Many people and businesses in the UK invest in France. For many UK individuals they have dreamt of living a new rural life in France for many years. The plan can be idyllic but unless the move is properly managed it can become a nightmare.

Our team has advised many people on the move to France. From helping them set up a business, transferring their existing business to France or perhaps just setting up for a quiet retirement. Many retain a base in the UK so that they have not burnt all the bridges and, if finances allow, this is a sensible precaution.

Our international personal tax specialist Paulette Peterson herself made the move with her husband a few years ago. Most of her work is carried out remotely for clients of our Cambridge office but she does provide some local support.

Those clients who intend to set up a French business are strongly advised to take advice from a French Accountant. Much of the system relies on custom and practice. We work with M. Thibaud to allow clients to gain the best local advice teamed with the best advice on the general principles of moving from one jurisdiction to another.

M.Thibaud is based in the South West area of France. A popular area with English visitors.

business clients

We help with the cessation accounts and tax computations for your UK business if this is going to cease.

For many businesses the complexities arise when their business continues after they have moved to France. It is possible to mitigate some of the adverse tax consequences at least for a period of time with careful planning.

Our French associates work with the local tax office to take care of all the paperwork.

international clients

Not all clients make a simple transfer of residence from one country to another. We advise many individuals who retain a "foot in both camps" and divide their time between the UK and France for some significant time. This raises many complex tax issues which we are used to dealing with.

We can advise executives who move to France and leave their family in the UK and can also advise employers on tax equalisation etc.

individual clients

Individuals moving to France or moving from France to the UK for work or retirement still have tax issues to be dealt with. Academics regularly move into Cambridge and this has helped us to build up our expertises on the tax issues involved.

As well as tax issues we also advise on the inheritance tax and pension changes which may result from your move.
