tax return deadline extended

Clients are advised that they should do everything they can to avoid taking advantage of the extended deadline offered by HMRC.

HMRC have responded to the news that there will be a strike of call centre staff by saying that they will allow an extra 2 days to file the returns without charging interest on the tax or a penalty for late filing. Stephen Banyard HMRC's acting director general for personal tax said “We've always been very clear that we want the returns – not the penalties. For that reason, we don't want anyone who can't get through for help and advice on 31 January to be disadvantaged in any way,”

The problem is that the tax return may include claims to carry back relief - or your may need to amend the previous years tax return. It is not clear that these will be affected. HMRC are likely to say that these are not matters where their call centre staff would have been able to help - so you do not need extra time to make the claim.

Also given HMRC track record with computer programs - it is possible that anyone taking advantage of the extra time may still get a penalty and have to appeal it.
